Weekly Newsletter for Freelancers

Freelancers And The Power Of Now
Perhaps there has never been a time in human history when so many workers were starting out their work journey alone. We are all called freelancers, but we come from many diverse backgrounds and skills with the common goal of making a fair and reasonable living, often in the global internet community. It does not matter what the reason was that we started the journey. We all share a commitment to changing our future, but having the right mindset for the journey is important.

When I was financial planner, I had a client who lost her husband at a young age, in her early twenties. I will call her Mary, not her real name. Mary had two children and her husband of about the same age had died of cancer after a six months battle with an aggressive form of melanoma that spread throughout his body. After several months we had worked out the best financial plan with superannuation entitlements from her husband's estate and government support possible for a young widow.

Over a cup of coffee and reviewing the results of the plan, I asked her what she was going to do. I had expected her to be totally demoralized, but she smiled at me radiantly over her cup of coffee and said: "Now, I am going to start a business." The photo of her two girls was sitting on the kitchen mantelpiece. That is the power of now! It is an important mindset that all freelancers should share.

Financial Tip Of The Week

How Valuable Is Your Time?
Have you worked at how valuable your work time is and what your charge out rate would be if you were being paid on an hourly basis? This is an important question especially if you find that you are under work-life balance pressure trying to get a complex gig completed on time and on budget. Imagine that on top of this it is the kids’ school holidays and they want to go to the local fun park where the local city council is putting on "fun in the park" during school holidays. What do you do?

If you have been smart you will have already thought about the question in the first paragraph. If you have, you would know what you need to charge for a fair and reasonable profit and what tasks you can outsource to ease the work-life balance pressure. Then you can say to the kids "Sure, when do you want to go?" and they will say "Good on you, Mum." If you haven't here is what you do: start to think about outsourcing parts of your contracts!

The first step is to become familiar with outsourcing platforms and read stories about others who have gone down that path. Smart thinking? Of course it is! Ask the kids. Here is an overview of some platforms you can use by clicking here. Here is a story about someone who has gone down this path that can be read here.
