What Makes A Freelancer Successful?
May 09, 2017
Weekly Newsletter for Freelancers
What Makes A Freelancer Successful?
Even the Harvard Business Review knows that "What Makes a Freelancer Successful” is a top topic not only in the United States, where there are about 50 million freelancers, but around the world. It is the way that employment is changing.
When you look in a mirror you see a reflection of yourself. Similarly, it is important to look at successful freelancers in your particular field and copy what has made them successful. It appears very simple, but not many freelancers do this. It beats making mistakes and learning that way.
Mistakes and going about things the wrong way is an easy trap to fall into when you start our freelancing. That is why this newsletter aims to search for the articles by successful freelancers in the various categories and share their articles with you.
This quote is very applicable to why this newsletter is following the strategy mentioned above:
"I was a freelancer all through my 20s and was very slow to get good at what I did.” Ira Glass
Harvard Business Review is one of the leading publications on business in the world and I receive their newsletter because it gives top tips. Amy Gallo has written this article for HBR: How to Become a Successful Freelancer. You can read Amy's article from here.
“I've learned that every working mom is a superwoman" -Uma Thurman.
Freelancing Moms and Dads Matter To Their Children.
Can you remember when you were in primary school whether you knew latch key children who went home to an empty house? I can as it was quite common in my childhood. It was caused by both parents having to go to work, usually to pay the mortgage. These children will remember this for the rest of their lives. My wife was a primary school teacher and we made the decision that she would not go back to work until our children reached the end of their primary school. For us that was our choice for our family.
It was a compromise, but it was only possible because I worked in a bank at the time and we had concessional housing finance for employees. Other couples were not so lucky.
Freelancing Moms are becoming very common nowadays and the government needs to support them because they are, in fact, small business owners that are not given the recognition they deserve.
Families that decide one parent, usually Mom, will work as a freelancer is a great decision for families – one that their children will remember favourably for the rest of their lives. It beats the children coming home to an empty house and this can be a primary motivation for families. There is an interesting article by Katie Allen about this trend that appears in the Guardian. You can read Katie's article here.
Productivity Tip Of The Week
Personal Productivity Apps Matter for Freelancers.
Apps are tools that can help freelancers lift their productivity. There are social media tools that can also help lift your productivity. I don't know whether you use or know about Hootsuite or Social Oomph, but they are tools that I find indispensable.
In fact, I think that I would have to give up a lot of online activity if I could not use them. Hootsuite and Social Oomph allow you to automate a lot of time consuming background work that you would not have any chance of managing.
An example of this is that I like to keep abreast with what is happening with the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation because it is going to change cyber security throughout the world. The leading provider of training for the EU, GDPR, is IT Governance in the UK, of which I am an affiliate.
They have a blog to which they post regularly. I use a Hootsuite RSS feed to post to my Twitter and Facebook Page on this subject. You can see the Twitter account here: EUGDPRToday.
The reason I am telling you this is that freelancers constantly have to be on the lookout for ways and means to lift their personal productivity.
In the Grow a Healthy Church Blog an article was written entitled How to Increase Your Personal Productivity with 12 Apps I Love which can help you lift your personal productivity. You can read the article from this link.
Work-Life Balance Tip Of The Week
Work At Home Moms And Dads Share Their Favourite Tips.
Talking and sharing your freelance journey can be a very powerful tool in managing your work-life balance. However, sometimes because of your location this will not be possible because other freelancers are not close by.
Nevertheless, you can still be a member of a group online and have a community that spans the globe. We seek out articles for you and share them in this newsletter, but it can never replace the one to one friendship that can develop from a shared interest. This quote is very appropriate:
"One of the most beautiful qualities of true friendship is to understand and to be understood." Lucius Annaeus Seneca.
Robin Long from The Balanced Life Online has shared 11 Tips for Work-At-Home Moms. You can read her article from this link.
Financial Tip Of The Week
Does Your Financial Planner, Bank Or Mortgage Broker Help You With Rising Interest Rates For Your Home Loan?
Freelancers, along with the rest of homeowners with payments for a variable rate mortgages in their family budget are very vulnerable to interest rate rises. A doubling of the interest rates which is quite possible would have many freelancers struggling with their family budgets.
Before this happens you would be smart to go and see your financial planner, bank or mortgage broker and ask for their help and advice. It is what you pay them for!
It is now clear that Blockchain and Smart Contracts have changed the world and consumers should be helped with rising interest rates. If you do not understand Blockchain and Smart Contracts, there is a video here that can help you understand it in two minutes.
On the right of the You Tube page there are a lot of other videos on the subject.
When you have a handle on Blockchain and Smart Contracts, go along to this website article. It explains how it can help you.
It is then time to go and see your Banker, Financial Planner or Mortgage Broker. It may well be one of the smartest moves that you will make in your financial life.
